A Blackthorn walking stick has the distinctive character of the Blackthorn from which its shaft is formed, while a Hazel walking stick offers the different natural colour, grain and markings of Hazel. Knots, variations in the bark and other natural features are part of the material rather than something every stickmaker necessarily seeks to remove.

Blackthorn, or Sloe, is harder to come by than Hazel – its denser, slower-growing wood is naturally hard and very sturdy. Hazel is less dense and makes for a somewhat lighter stick at similar widths, with a measure of natural flexibility.

The choice between Blackthorn and Hazel is therefore not simply about one wood being "better" than the other. For an Abbeyhorn stick, the particular shaft and the style of its ramshorn or stag antler handle combine to determine the character of the finished piece.
