Sgian Dubh Knives

The Sgian Dubh is one of the most distinctive elements of traditional Highland dress, steeped in Scottish history and symbolism. Translating from Gaelic as “black knife” or “hidden knife,” the Sgian Dubh was traditionally worn concealed beneath the arm or in a jacket, before later being placed visibly in the top of the long sock, as a gesture of trust and friendship.
Originally used as a small utility knife for everyday tasks, it evolved over centuries into a ceremonial accessory that reflects the pride, craftsmanship, and heritage of the Scottish Highlands.
Today, the Sgian Dubh remains an iconic finishing touch to formal Highland attire, combining timeless tradition with beautifully crafted design.
